If you’ve been following Order & Progress for a while, you know I don’t chase novelty. Every movement I put in front of you has to earn its place.
This one earned it.
I filmed this video with Mark Wildman, and if you don’t know Mark, here’s the short version.
He’s a celebrity trainer who has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, specifically preparing actors for superhero and action films. When studios need someone to move like a martial artist on screen, they call Mark.
He’s also widely regarded as the world’s best heavy club trainer.
Mark introduced me to heavy clubs in 2021. That introduction completely changed how I train and view the body.
Clubs were the missing link I badly needed after years of chronic pain and injuries. They unified the strength I had already built and exposed my body to a movement pattern I had been neglecting for years: rotation.
I haven’t looked back since.
The Heavy Club Shin Box Shield Cast
In this video, we cover the Shin Box Shield Cast.
It’s exactly what it sounds like, the Shin Box position combined with the heavy club Shield Cast. But what happens when you put these two movements together is more than the sum of its parts.
Here’s why it works.
When you hold the Shin Box position, your hips are not passive. There are constant micro-adjustments happening, small stabilizing movements that drive hip internal and external rotation.
You are not stretching your hips. You are forcing them to mobilize under load, which is a completely different stimulus and a far more effective one.
At the same time, the Shield Cast is moving dynamically up the chain.
The thoracic spine rotates, the shoulders move through a full, loaded range of motion, and because you’re stabilizing from the ground up while the upper body moves, the whole system has to work together.
As a grappler, your hips and shoulders take more punishment than any other area of your body.
They are also two of the most important areas for strength, mobility, and resilience. Most programs train them in isolation. This combo trains them simultaneously, in a way that actually mirrors how your body moves on the mat.
